Water damage in Eureka?
If the water is from river or storm flooding, stay out of it: floodwater is Category 3 contaminated water and can hide hazards. For a burst pipe or appliance leak, shut off the water if you can. About Eureka
Eureka is a city of about 11,600 people (2020 Census), mainly in St. Louis County with a small portion in Jefferson County, along the Meramec River. It has grown quickly, from about 7,700 residents in 2000, and in 2019 it annexed the 549-home Windswept Farms subdivision that was then under construction. Its position on the Meramec makes river flooding part of local history in a way it isn't for most of the Chesterfield area.
River and storm flooding in Eureka
Eureka's two most catastrophic floods came close together. After 6 to 12 inches of rain fell from December 26 to 28, 2015, the Meramec River crested at 46 feet on December 30, three feet above the previous record. The flood damaged 80 homes and 40 businesses, caused about $2.5 million in damage to Eureka High School and closed a 24-mile stretch of Interstate 44. Record flooding returned after a strong spring storm system on April 29 and 30, 2017. Cleanup after floodwater is always treated as contaminated, and porous materials it soaks are usually removed. Flood damage from outside is generally excluded from standard homeowners policies and needs separate flood insurance. See does insurance cover water damage.
Flooded basement cleanup in Eureka
Not every flooded basement in Eureka is river-related. Heavy rain, groundwater and drainage problems send water into basements anywhere in the city, including higher ground well away from the Meramec. Flooded basement cleanup starts by identifying the source, because it decides whether the water is gray or contaminated.
Sump pump failure water damage in Eureka
Eureka has grown quickly, and any home with a basement that depends on a sump pump is at risk when that pump stops. A pump that fails during heavy rain, especially during a power outage, can flood a lower level quickly. See sump pump failure water damage for cleanup steps and the insurance endorsement that commonly applies.
Emergency water extraction in Eureka
After any significant water event, removing standing water quickly is the first priority. Emergency water extraction uses pumps and extractors to get water out of floors and carpet before it wicks into walls.
Mold remediation after flooding in Eureka
Floodwater and lingering dampness in basements can lead to mold within days. The EPA advises drying within 24 to 48 hours and calling professionals for areas larger than about 10 square feet, or whenever contaminated water was involved. See mold remediation.
