The short answer
Water damage from a failed sump pump is often not covered by a standard homeowners policy on its own. It commonly requires a water backup endorsement, optional coverage that applies when water backs up through drains or overflows from a sump. If you don't have it, sump-related water damage may be excluded. Check your policy wording and talk to your agent.
This is general information, not insurance advice. Your policy decides your coverage.
Why sump pump failures are treated differently
Standard homeowners policies generally cover water damage that is sudden and accidental, such as a burst pipe. A sump overflow is commonly classed with sewer and drain backups, which standard policies often exclude. And if the water entered from outside as flooding, it's generally excluded and requires flood insurance. How your insurer classifies the event matters.
What a water backup endorsement usually does
- Adds coverage for water that backs up through sewers or drains, or overflows from a sump pump
- Usually comes with its own coverage limit, which may be lower than your main policy limit
- Is added for an extra premium. Ask your agent what limits are available
Because sump failures and sewer backups are two of the most common causes of basement water damage, it's worth confirming whether you have this coverage before storm season.
How to file a claim after a sump pump failure
- Make it safe and limit the damage. Policies commonly expect you to take reasonable steps to prevent further damage.
- Document the pump and the water. Photograph the pit, the pump, the water level and damaged items.
- Keep the failed pump or its parts if it's replaced. The insurer may want to see it.
- Report the claim promptly and ask whether your policy includes water backup coverage.
- Keep drying records and receipts from the restoration provider.
